Paper to Pixels Didactic Sequence "How-to Graphic" instructional illustration

Dates: Preliminary drawing and panel compositions due 9/12
Polished design drawings due small-group response 9/19
Final design due for critique 9/26. Also turn in photo references and development drawings (as scans or photos).

The final version of the design may be a raster or a vector file, however it must be derived from your own thoroughly-developed illustration drawings in ink or graphite. You may use YOUR own original photography as reference for the illustrations. The project will have a limited palette of 2-3 colors of your choice. The illustration will have at least 9 distinct panels, events or depictions of stages, and must be a detailed accurate, and informative sequence.

Basic requirements

The design will describe a "how to" of your choice in subject matter; pick something that you can have a single model successfully act out or execute. You may be your own model! In order to give yourself rich material to work with visually, it should be sufficiently complex. See "Some criteria for your consideration" below.

Finished design to be composed to fit onto one side of a standard sheet size or a standard cut: 8.5"x 11", 11"x14", 11"x 17."
1, 2 spot, or 3 spot colors of your choice.

Must be lucid and clearly descriptive. The sequence should flow between stages, and the whole composition should be internally coherent. Visually appealing.

Employ a variety of visual devices and modes of representation.

Have at least 9 stages, steps, or individual illustrations.

No text except the title of the piece. Alphanumeric labels my be used on an otherwise entirely visual legend, if a legend is employed.

Some criteria for your consideration:

Composition and Framing
Overall effective composition. Activates interest without distracting from delivery of information. Interesting, pleasing individual "panels" balanced effectively as individual information while also operating as part of a whole composition and keyframe in a sequence. Consideration of format shape and devices to direct flow and eye movement appropriately. Scale of information thoughtfully treated.

Storyboard, Subdivisions, and Sequencing
Lucid, logical sequencing. Strategic choices to depict high-leverage moments in the sequence. Appropriate degree of focus, cropping, angle of view. Do you need a "set up" panel? A visual display of ingredients, or a legend of pieces, parts, or tools? Does the sequence have a sense of conclusion? Do the compositional elements and visual hierarchy lead the eye in the correct sequence? The panels, whether explicit or implicit, are dynamic and enhance legibility and flow of the sequence. Appropriate editing of information portrayed: eradicate muda.

Multileveled Information
Organized, multileveled, inventive and descriptive use of visual devices and modes of representation. Distinctive visual encoding of different elements of sequence.

Medium
Choice of apparent media and rendering style expressively appropriate to subject matter. Stylistic devices enhance approachability and elucidation, do not distract or detract from legibility.

Use of Color
Organized to provide additional elucidation. Visually pleasing, color palette appropriate to context and subject matter. Meaningful use of color effects where appropriate.
