Illustrator Greyscale Objects

How well do you remember Adobe Illustrator from the introductory projects in ART156? The objects below make use of a range of translations and pathfinder techniques.
Technical fluency in vector drawing demands an organized approach and strategic thinking. It is the difference between a thirty-minute object and a three-minute object!

Illustrator Greyscale Objects
:

Point Values & Criteria
Exercise 1 AI Greyscale Objects, 8o points possible
Criteria: Objects are complete. Objects constructed with precision and efficiency: items symmetrical, edges and anchor points aligned logically, no redundant objects, copies, anchor points. Paths are well-crafted and closed, arranged in logical groupings, thought given to page composition. Greyscale colorspace; document opens with toolboxes open or closed appropriately. Maximum points may be earned even if the object does not completely match example, but general proportions should be adhered to.

Vector Insect Rendering

Create a naturalistic rendered illustration of an insect from a photographic source. CMYK, scalable, demonstrate effective use of a variety of techniques, including the mesh tool, object blends, and gradients. The Insect rendering should be presented on an off-white or neutral background, with the file construction functioning as a spot illustration.

Exercise 2 AI Color Objects
8o points

Criteria: Objects are complete. Color gradients built and placed logically, color palettes/toolboxes organized. Objects constructed with precision and efficiency: items symmetrical, edges and anchor points aligned logically,
no redundant objects, copies, anchor points. Paths well-crafted and closed, logical groupings, thought given to page composition. Maximum points may be earned even if the object does not completely match example, but general proportions should be adhered to.

3 Typefaces

Build three type faces or type animals; black and white only. You may use any typographic characters, you may mix typefaces, you may rescale and rotate characters. Do not distort characters.Typographic elements are to be filled with solid black only. Turn in all three as computer files; choose the best one and print to lettersized hardcopy and mount.

Vector Portrait
Due March 14
Adobe Illustrator

Working from YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHY as reference, create an Illustrator portrait of an individual you know- a friend or family member. The portrait composition must include at least one hand. The artwork may be set up as any proportions, but for critique, have a mounted print on tabloid or larger paper. Affix a label with your first and last name to the back of the mounting board.

Notes on photography:
Although there are likely to be alterations as you move from photo to illustration, begin your photography with the end in mind. Consider the composition, the viewpiont, the setting, shadows, lighting. I would expect that ou will take multiple photos with different exposures and viewpoints, in order to have the most effectove range of reference possible. Think ahead about what kind of information you will want available. For instance, you may choose to work witha dramatic lighting situation, and set up your model with strong light deep shadows. Consider the special characteristics of your model's features that can add expressive qualities or interest-consider creating a portrait of an elderly person or a child, both of which pose particular challenges. Is it possible to suggest anything about the biography or personality of the subject? Along with this reference, you should also photograph the same pose with more ambient light, so that you will have the information to incorporate into the deep shadow areas should you decide to introduce more atmospheric, subtle information. Determine other elements for the photography-what clothing is the individual wearing, what is the mise en scene? Will the letterforms be part of the photo reference? Will you incorporate any narrative or symbolic information?

Color & Design Studies (warm up for logo design) Exercises due on CD for Turn in by end of class Tuesday 11/15.

ART107 Refresher/prep for logo project:

Using Illustrator with black solid fills and closed paths, do the following exercises at http://www.rit.edu/library/archives/rkelly/html/04_cou/cou_des3.html

Exercises 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11

Read through the text here:
http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/sgrais/color_context.htm

Create example swatches demonstrating
1. maximum hue shift
2. maximum value shift
Reverse the classic assignment:
3.maximum hue & value contrast. Working with two colors that are different from one another in hue, chroma, and/or value, make them appear the same using simultaneous contrast.

You may use either rgb or cmyk for the document color mode. Put all three color studies together in one ai. document. Create a folder: FIrstLastDesignStudies and put the black and white exercises and the color study into it for turning in.

RGB Color Wheel- design a color wheel using rgb as your color model.

In Design 3 page layout

ONe double spread, plus single page.

3-5 photos, one stripped photo, Illustrator import of headline or display type which formally "rhymes" with at least one photo in layout.
Finished file must be packaged for output.

Photoshop technique studies

Using your own source imagery, create examples of:

1. Extraction

2. Content-Aware fill (with other retouching techniques to polish as needed)

3. Puppet Warp

Save your layered files and original files as demonstration of your process.

Double Page Spread
InDesign

Create a layout design for a double page reader spread for a magazine, graphic novel, or illustrated book.
The design must incorporate some body (paragraph) text. Incorporate graphics, photography, and illustration,
and other espressive or structural typographic design. The final design may be executed in Illustrator, or InDesign, and incorporate source files that have
been appropriately sized and prepared in Photoshop.

COURSE CD

Include all of the projects listed here, except the diagnostic exercise objects. Use a permanent marker to write your name and ART256 Spring 09 directly on the CD.
If you have reworked any projects, please highlight this fact for me with a "before" folder containing jpgs of the original artwork you had turned in, as well as an "after" folder with the same project in a final version.
